As we do in the studio, we have a well-defined approach to teaching art.

Our teaching method can be described as “classical”, in the most generous sense of that term. We are quite settled on that! Though it is expected that (the best of) students will eventually go their own way, the wisest instruction is a product of a firmly held point-of-view, a way of looking-about the world. The student profits the most from a mentor who teaches from conviction.

THE ARTIST AS PROVOCATEUR:

One paints & draws, let alone mentors, from a particular point-of-view. A view oflooking upon the world this way and not that: from a philosophy, if you will.

We hint at our painterly philosophy in commentary on the Series PAGES; and on our PAGE introducing our Drawing Course. Take a look, go to links above.

If one paints and mentors in the public square, important to exhibit one’s worldview (pictorial philosophy) upfront..

The works in one of our series, The Provocatives, are painted with that worldview very much in mind, and sitting the tip of our Hog-Bristle Brush. More than that, Provocative picture-painting is done with that philosophy as its muse – down to the selection of subject & theme.

As the name suggests, these paintings – oversized in theme and execution – are meant to provoke into view our way of looking upon the world: one that is unabashedly Judeo-Christian, Western, American, and Californian. Perusal of the titles listed under The Provocatives will show why and how.

OUR ARTISTIC (PICTORIAL) PROJECT

An overview of our Series PAGES tells all – we’re busy.

Yet, these points:

  • Ways & Methods. It’s the way we paint them: the selection of subjects, the experiments in composition, palette construction and the keying of tones and hues; the overabundance of preparatory studies – then the brushwork. Takes time, concentration. All this to say, our works step out of the studio at a slower pace than most.
  • How Long to Complete the Series Project. Titles listed under each series are the inaugural works. Others to be listed. Steady, monthly production of oils and drawings for some, such as Native American Chiefs & Warriors. For others, in particular The Provocatives, they walk out the door at a slower pace: at most, two a year. What’s listed is a 5-7 year project.
  • What’s for Sale? Original oil paintings and graphite drawings, plus preparatory studies and sketches. Discounts available for both individuals and dealers/brokers. (See charts for details.) Reproductions are not produced, nor authorized. This applies to both Original Paintings and Drawings – which makes what’s done hold greater valuable!
  • Putting Your Interest First. The order of listed titles does not indicate order of production. Interested in any title? Notify the Artist. Will gladly put it on top!
  • The Heart of Our Pictorial Program: Of course that means  The Provocatives for their outsized subjects and themes – and execution. DOES THE ARTIST MAINTAIN A RUNNING “BLOG” ON HIS WORK?

No!

Running-on blogs (and their sibling brood) are time-consuming and distracting.

The Artist does keeps a private journal: daily entries on works assigned to the easel; notes on themes, decisions regarding composition and palette; comments when errors and misdirections are adjusted, when works are – for whatever – abandonment or finished and sent forth. Journals also used to sketch out the goals and structure of each series, let alone, any stray thoughts on one’s painterly philosophy, such as it is.

Time better spent publishing those entries in book form. Journal/Book Series: titled: Notes & Definitions on Picture-Painting: Book One (Book Two) (Book Three . . . et al.)

The Book Series snatches up journal entries, folds in other commentary, and chronicles the birth of each work. See companion site for details on Book Series’ format and content:

Book Series to be sold through Amazon’s Kindle. Hard-copy edition to follow. Published thrice yearly, mostly in conjunction with exhibitions of completed Provocative Paintings. Good for “getting-talk-going”!

DAVID SOLWAY ON THE GREEK ISLAND OF HYDRA

Each moment is so exquisitely beautiful that the artist feels compelled to back up God’s uncertain memory and record the event in which uniqueness inheres: the cat that walked into the donkey’s leg, the elderly man with the rose sprocketed behind his ear, the sun glittering on a spider’s web, the butterfly sipping from your wineglass. But the effort stands defeated in its inception, for who records the event of the recorded event? Who remembers who remembers? If God recovered his memory, we could dispense with poetry. A second insight follows on the first to soften the hybris implicit in it. It is not only art that compensates for that Exalted Alzheimer’s but the human imagination itself. In this respect every man and woman is an artist. The artist simply makes a vocation out of it.

EXHIBITION #1

“GUARDIAN ANGEL OF HETCH-HETCHY: ONE DAMN BEAUTIFUL DAM”

  • Note: Completion of Original Oil, along with its studies & sketches, will take time. As a Provocative it is out-sized in both execution & theme, Check here for updates. Here we list the first group of studies and drawings. The next group to follow.
  • Original Oil tossed onto the easel Dec. 2015/Jan. 2016.
  • First Group of Studies focus on the Guardian Angel. Much preliminary work needed – to get him right – including the call out for the near perfect model.
  • Guardian Angel: The look of him must – in appearance & attitude – fit the bold theme of this outsized painting: the construction of California’s Great Water Project is an engineering wonder & a marvel. A thing of beauty of the moral imagination – for the men, women & unborn babes of California.
  • The Guardian Angel is at home striding Hetch-Hetchy while remaining faithful to the ancient (and persisting) story of Angels in the history of peoples & nations. To us, this means excavating images from ancient Mesopotamia and the Hebrews, from Qumran and Coptic Ethiopia, from St. Michael caught in Gothic stone and Russian iconography – all the while shaking off the Pre-Raphaelites and 19th Century Catholic kitsch. Even after all that – maybe above all – our Guardian Angel must (will) be very much of California.
